Alt Text Creator 1.2 is now available!
Tumblr media
Earlier this year, I released Alt Text Creator, a browser extension that can generate alternative text for images by right-clicking them, using OpenAI's GPT-4 with Vision model. The new v1.2 update is now rolling out, with support for OpenAI's newer AI models and a new custom server option.
Alt Text Creator can now use OpenAI's latest GPT-4o Mini or GPT-4o AI models for processing images, which are faster and cheaper than the original GPT-4 with Vision model that the extension previously used (and will soon be deprecated by OpenAI). You should be able to generate alt text for several images with less than $0.01 in API billing. Alt Text Creator still uses an API key provided by the user, and uses the low resolution option, so it runs at the lowest possible cost with the user's own API billing.
This update also introduces the ability to use a custom server instead of OpenAI. The LM Studio desktop application now supports downloading AI models with vision abilities to run locally, and can enable a web server to interact with the AI model using an OpenAI-like API. Alt Text Creator can now connect to that server (and theoretically other similar API limitations), allowing you to create alt text entirely on-device without paying OpenAI for API access.
Tumblr media
The feature is a bit complicated to set up, is slower than OpenAI's API (unless you have an incredibly powerful PC), and requires leaving LM Studio open, so I don't expect many people will use this option for now. I primarily tested it with the Llava 1.5 7B model on a 16GB M1 Mac Mini, and it was about half the speed of an OpenAI request (8 vs 4 seconds for one example) while having generally lower-quality results.
You can download Alt Text Creator for Chrome and Firefox, and the source code is on GitHub. I still want to look into support for other AI models, like Google's Gemini, and the option for the user to change the prompt, but I wanted to get these changes out soon before GPT-4 Vision was deprecated.

How to use search engines effectively in the year of our lord 2025
So, we all know Google sucks now. There are some other alternative search engines, but honestly, switching search engines isn't going to fix a lot of the fundamental issues we're seeing with search engines nowadays. But yesterday, while responding to someone on reddit who was making the argument of "Google sucks now, so really, how much worse is it to just ask ChatGPT" I realized that there is actually a formula for using search engines that I have that continues to work perfectly for most things despite the fact that Google sucks now, so I thought I would share.
First of all, to remove all of the AI bullshit from Google, you can use udm14.com instead, or install the udm=14 browser extension. The method I outline here may or may not work with search engines other than Google, I haven't looked into them deeply enough. udm14.com should be essentially just Google, but without AI.
Then, we have to go back to the beginning and understand what a search engine actually is, and what it isn't. I spent three years of my career working in the guts of a search engine (not Google, or any other web-based search engine), so I should hope I would know what they are:
A search engine is a tool to locate documents.
Google in particular has done a lot to obscure what a search engine actually is by adding a lot of "cool" "features" to their search engine which are not actually within the scope of search engine capabilities. When you search for a question and Google displays a bolded answer that it found on a web page? Not search engine provenance. When it displays its "AI Summary"? Not search engine provenance. When it advertises things to you? Not search engine provenance. When it comes up with questions that "other people asked"? Not search engine provenance. The core competency of a search engine is to find documents (in this case, web pages) from a large collection of documents (the internet) based on their relevance to a query you have typed. Just like people are misusing ChatGPT to do stuff it was not designed for and that it is not good at, using a search engine as if it is a question answering service that can deliver the answer to a question you asked is using the search engine to do something it was not designed for and is not good at.
The search engine is not an all-in-one tool any more than ChatGPT is an all-in-one tool. Research is a multi-step process that involves a search engine, but the search engine cannot do everything for you. Here is the process:
Learn how to identify reliable sources of information. Learn what sites tend to have reliable information about the topic you're looking up. Wikipedia is a good fallback that may give you links to other reliable sources. You can also ask people who know more about your topic for recommendations of good sites. There are also sites that rank the reliability and bias of other popular sites. The search engine's ability to find relevant documents is not super useful when the internet is full of untrustworthy bullshit and is becoming more so as time goes on due to AI-generated content. Just because a search engine returns a link does not mean it is reliable.
Use a search engine to specifically search just the websites you know are reliable for your topic. Google has some documentation about how to do this on their search engine here. There should be a way to do this on any other half-decent search engine, as well, but I don't have the details of how to do it. Now you have limited your scope from "anything and everything produced by everyone who has ever created a Wordpress account plus whoever paid Google to have their site appear in every single search" to a collection of documents that you can trust.
Read the sources that you get back from the search engine. No, seriously. Read them. Don't read Google's "AI Summary". Read the actual sources. Don't read the bolded answer Google put at the top of the results list. Read the sources. Don't ask another AI to summarize the sources for you. Read the sources. Don't just read the headline or title and assume you now know everything that is in the body of the article. READ THE SOURCES. There is no shortcut for this, you have to read.
There was a time when you could get away with being lax about this and just do general searches, but that was because there was an actual limit on the amount of wrong information that mere humans could generate per unit time, and also because Google did legitimately use to be more concerned with promoting reliable sources than with promoting whoever paid them the most money to do so. But that time is over.
Basically, if you wouldn't just type your question into ChatGPT and hope for the best, don't just type your question into Google and hope for the best, either.

AI Customization: How I Dealt with a Stupid Youtube Feature
Tumblr media
Youtube has a feature where, if you didn't finish your last video, it'll pop up in a miniplayer on your youtube homepage.
Personally, I hate this thing. I never use it. It just blocks the screen and means more button clicking. I emailed google months ago about it, asking them for an option to disable it, but no luck.
Today, annoyed again, I asked AI for help. It noted that there were some options in the youtube app to turn them off, but I'm just using the browser on my laptop, so that wouldn't help. It then linked to a firefox extension, but it only had like 5 reviews and seemed very sus. I didn't want to install it.
So, I asked chatgpt to help me create my own extension that would run on my laptop.
Now, I am not a computer coder. I can do some basic html, and that's about it. But after 10 minutes of back and forth, q and a, with the AI, I now have my own firefox extension that does exactly what I want: It blocks the miniplayer on the youtube homepage. It's perfect.
I think one of the things about AI that most people don't appreciate is how it will allow on-the-fly creation of customized coding solutions.
I think we're all used to having problems, and trying to find software that hopefully addresses our needs, and isn't too expensive or complex. But with AI today we don't need to find existing one-size-fits-all solutions and shoehorn them into our workflows. We are reaching a point where AI can just design our solutions on the spot. As another example, let's say you got some complex data to be analyzed. If the AI doesn't have the intrinsic ability to answer your data analysis questions, it can just code for programs that do. (This is, in fact, how some AI models work.)
Just like the internet lowered barriers to information access, AI is lowering barriers to intelligence and its products. When I was a kid, if you wanted to know about, say, the history of dandelions, you'd need to go to the library and prepare for a lot of research - and it probably wasn't something you'd just do randomly; today, you can jump down any ol data rabbit hole at 2am from your bed. Of course, libraries still exist, researching still exists, etc - but the internet made it so much easier, we can now indulge our every curiosity with ease. Similarly, AI will not just accelerate research, but will allow us in our daily lives to indulge in whatever intelligence endeavor we so desire.
p.s. AI is still a young field. It's still far from perfect. But it's improving at breakneck speed.
p.s. some customization ideas I'd love to be able to implement: in the car "move to another radio station anytime the band Queen comes on the radio" (I love queen but its SO overplayed). "If a phone call with my folks exceeds an hour, make the phone ring so I have an 'out' to go if I want." "Block any youtube videos or tumblr posts about episodes of my favorite shows that I've not yet seen."

I made a browser extension!!
Turns out it's literally just regular JS. No additions. Just DOM. Or at least that's the case in Firefox. It was fun!! I haven't done any programming in a while so it was quite refreshing to do a little. Without ChatGPT!

Introducing Alt Text Creator
Tumblr media
Images on web pages are supposed to have alternate text, which gives screen readers, search engines, and other tools a text description of the image. Alt text is critical for accessibility and search engine optimization (SEO), but it can also be time-consuming, which is why I am releasing Alt Text Creator!
Alt Text Creator is a new browser extension for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome (and other browsers that can install from the Chrome Web Store) that automatically generates alt text for image using the OpenAI GPT-4 with Vision AI. You just right-click any image, select "Create Alt Text" in the context menu, and a few seconds later the result will appear in a notification. The alt text is automatically copied to your clipboard, so it doesn't interrupt your workflow with another button to click.
I've been using a prototype version of this extension for about three months (my day job is News Editor at How-To Geek), and I've been impressed by how well the GPT-4 AI model describes text. I usually don't need to tweak the result at all, except to make it more specific. If you're curious about the AI prompt and interaction, you can check out the source code. Alt Text Creator also uses the "Low Resolution" mode and saves a local cache of responses to reduce usage costs.
I found at least one other browser extension with similar functionality, but Alt Text Creator is unique for two reasons. First, it uses your own OpenAI API key that you provide. That means the initial setup is a bit more annoying, but the cost is based on usage and billed directly through OpenAI. There's no recurring subscription, and ChatGPT Plus is not required. In my own testing, creating alt text for a single image costs under $0.01. Second, the extension uses as few permissions as possible—it doesn't even have access to your current tab, just the image you select.
This is more of a niche tool than my other projects, but it's something that has made my work a bit less annoying, and it might help a few other people too. I might try to add support for other AI backends in the future, but I consider this extension feature-complete in its current state.

Every generation has been more tech literate than the one preceding it, but we seem to have finally hit a turning point where the kids are getting worse. Not dumber, just worse. And it isn't entirely their fault...
At some point circa 2000-2010, tech literacy peaked among schoolchildren as computers and operating systems were getting refined, but were just annoying and rough enough that in order to use them properly you had to really understand *how* to use a computer. You had to troubleshoot.
But then those rough edges got smoothed out. At some point, applications became apps. The majority of kids whose families couldn't afford their own laptops found accessibility in the cheaper, more streamlined Chromebooks - computers which trade out the robust operating systems of a PC/Mac for being a glorified web browser machine to save costs. Slowly, in the name of accessibility and sales, quality of life improvements overtook the entire process of using a computer, and, by extension, how students interact with the internet. The skills to search slowly became less necessary as everything consolidated to a handful of websites. Google started shifting from showing specific query-driven results to using incomprehensible algorithms to show you what they think you want to see. To a gross extension of this comes ChatGPT and AI.
And so these are the tools they learn with, and thus the reason to really hone one's skills in using those tools died out as everything starts to kinda be done for you. When I was a kid in that era, if I wanted to play a game over the Internet with a friend, we had to do some extensive research on how to connect in real-time to sync up our games and get it to work. Now, though? It Just Works™
If you want to do research on a given topic, you could spend time trolling through articles and looking up citation formats for a paper. Now, you just ask the magic technology prompt to clean it up for you. It's easy, it's convenient for everybody, but the real trick is that it means you're disincentivized from ever really going beyond that and figuring out how all of the pieces come together.
Accessibility is a *good* thing, for the record; the more people who can use a tool, the better off we all are as a whole, after all. The key lesson however is in how the tools are taught. Computer classes, typing classes, and general Internet safety lectures have been getting phased out from curriculum while predatory data gathering has skyrocketed. I'm not gonna sit here and pretend that I know a solution, but I am wanting to note that while these kids seem doomed, it's not entirely their own fault. If anything, blame capitalism for dumbing everything down to the lowest common consumer.

Make ChatGPT Smarter: Best Tools and Plugins to Try in 2025
Tumblr media
ChatGPT is already a fantastic tool for answering questions, writing content, or even coding. But did you know you can make it even smarter? With the right tools and plugins, you can unlock new features and tailor ChatGPT to your needs. Whether you’re a student, professional, or tech enthusiast, these tools are easy to use and super effective. Here’s a quick guide to the best plugins to enhance ChatGPT in 2025!
Why Boost ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is great, but it has limits. It can’t browse the web in real-time, handle complex data analysis, or create visuals on its own. Plugins fix that by adding new abilities, like pulling live data or automating tasks. The best part? You don’t need to be a tech expert to use them. Let’s explore the top tools to make ChatGPT your ultimate assistant.
1. WebChatGPT: Real-Time Web Access
Want ChatGPT to fetch the latest news or research? WebChatGPT is a browser extension that gives it real-time web access. For example, ask about recent AI trends, and it’ll scan articles to give you fresh answers. It’s perfect for researchers or anyone needing up-to-date info.
How to Use: Install WebChatGPT on Chrome, link it to ChatGPT, and enable web access when needed. It’s that simple!
2. Code Interpreter: Code and Analyze Data
For coders and data lovers, the Code Interpreter plugin is a must. It lets ChatGPT write and run code in Python, JavaScript, and more. It can also analyze datasets and create charts. I used it to graph some sales data, and it saved me hours!
Why It’s Great: It’s like having a coding tutor and data analyst in one. Available via ChatGPT Plus, it’s a game-changer for technical tasks.
3. Canva Plugin: Create Visuals Easily
ChatGPT excels with words, but the Canva plugin adds visuals to the mix. Describe a design—like a “fun social media post about AI”—and it’ll generate a professional graphic in Canva. I made a poster for an event in minutes, and it looked amazing.
How to Start: Find the Canva plugin in the ChatGPT store, connect your Canva account, and start designing.
4. Zapier: Automate Your Tasks
With Zapier, ChatGPT can connect to apps like Slack, Google Docs, or Trello. Set up automations—like saving ChatGPT’s ideas to a Notion page—and watch your productivity soar. I use it to organize blog notes, and it’s a huge time-saver.
Pro Tip: Start with simple automations and explore Zapier’s 5,000+ app connections.
Final Thoughts
These plugins—WebChatGPT, Code Interpreter, Canva, and Zapier—make ChatGPT smarter and more versatile. Whether you need real-time data, visuals, coding help, or automation, there’s a tool for you. Head to the ChatGPT plugin store, try one out, and see the difference. Which will you pick first? Let me know in the comments!
Note: Always use trusted plugins and follow OpenAI’s guidelines for safe usage.
